WHY ARE HEADRESTS IMPORTANT AND HOW TO FIT THEM?

Most of us know that car seat headrests are designed to enhance comfort during car ride. But how many are aware that headrests are important safety features, too?

In terms of driving comfort, drivers in general focus on adjusting steering wheel and seat position. They often forget to also adjust headrest’s height and angle or may not even know what the ideal headrest position is. A properly adjusted headrest can minimize muscle sore from driving. Not only that; it also has safety benefits.

This is because the headrest, or head restraint, is in fact vital to protecting our neck in an unfortunate situation of a traffic accident. In case of collision, either rear or front-end, our body experiences sudden force so powerful that our neck and head may abruptly jerk forward and backward. The headrest can help keep that motion under control, which may otherwise cause whiplash injury or worse.

To fit your headrest, just make sure that the bulk of your headrest stands directly behind your head at ear-level. Your headrest should not be lower than your ear, as this position will not give you the safety benefit.

One thing to keep in mind is to always have the headrests in place. Without them, the trauma sustained in a collision may be even more consequential. Brain concussion, head trauma, permanent disability, and even fatality may be the result of poor safety measures. Traveling neck pillow is also not advisable and cannot replace a headrest. For both drivers and passengers, safety should always be first.
