MIXING REGULAR AIR AND NITROGEN FOR YOUR TIRES, IS IT OK?

So here’s a question: is it ok to mix regular air with nitrogen in your tires? Actually you can mix regular air and nitrogen, but with risks.

Some facts. Nitrogen has a larger number of molecules than air, so it can maintain tire temperature at bay. For the same reason, the elasticity of the tire also is also better. The nature of molecules contained in nitrogen is the ability to reduce scraping and wear inside.

Some problems may happen when you add regular air into the mix. Just imagine, with regular air alone, tire pressure can increase by 4 to 5 psi when the temperature is high. Mix air with nitrogen and the pressure can rise even higher.

When the pressure rises, you can start saying goodbye to all the benefits that you get from using nitrogen. Instant impact would include tires that are getting hard and therefore worse handling and braking performance. In this kind of situation, accident may be just around the corner.

In the long run, especially in a high temperature environment, thermal expansion of the tires will happen and it can break the tire surface. Don’t forget that these can also happen when tire pressure is lower than the standard requirement.

So, if you want to benefit from using nitrogen in the tires, consider to avoid mixing it with regular air and always ensure that the pressure complies with the manufacturer recommendation to keep your tires performance at maximum.
