HOW TO CHECK YOUR VEHICLE’S OIL

Checking the condition of your engine oil is very important. It can be part of your vehicle’s regular maintenance, or done whenever necessary, for example before a long travel. A regular check needs to be done at least once a month to prevent breaks and wear, which could cost you significantly for repair.

Engine oil check-up is easy to do. A piece of clean cloth or tissue and a pair of gloves to keep your hands clean are all you need. Now, follow the steps below:

  1. Park your car on a flat surface and turn off your engine. Wait until the engine cools down.
  2. Open the engine hood and secure it.
  3. Locate your dipstick. It is usually made of plastic and has a bright color, e.g. yellow or white. Check your vehicle manual if the stick is difficult to find.
  4. Check your engine oil – condition and level.

How do I know if my oil needs change?

Pull out the dipstick. Since oil color does not indicate condition nor quality, observe the smell instead. Pungent smell tells you that your engine oil needs to be changed.

How do I check oil level?

Pull out the dipstick and wipe it with a piece of cloth or tissue. Look for the level marks on the dipstick. Insert the dipstick and pull it back out again. Check where the oil ends on the markers; if it ends below the lower level mark, you’ll need to add more oil.
